Mitchell State School was initially built in 1876, with the addition of the secondary school department in 1961. Mitchell State School’s motto ‘Quam optime’, meaning ‘Higher still’, underpins what we strive for each day – the best that we can do in all aspects of school life. This motto is demonstrated everyday through our three core values - Be a Learner, Be Respectful, Be Safe.
Our current school purpose is: 'To lift the wellbeing and engagement of our school community, through inclusive practices, so that every student achieves equity and excellence.'
Mitchell State School is situated on the Warrego Highway, 89 kms west of Roma and 181 kms east of Charleville. Mitchell is a small community largely serviced by the beef industry. In this respect, the Mitchell State School community prides itself on our MI Kitchen Garden and Agricultural Program that all students in Year 5 -10 access through the curriculum.
Mitchell State School will be holding its 150 Years Celebration on the long weekend in May 2026. All past students and staff are invited to join our current community in celebrating 150 years of quality education at MSS on the 2nd and 3rd May 2026.
